Placement Guidelines

Biological Sciences

If you are planning to take BIOSC 0150: Foundations of Biology, please 听to听enroll in the pre-assessment course via听Canvas.

English Composition for U.S. Students

Please complete the , if you did not submit official SAT and/or ACT scores to the University in order to select the appropriate starting point in the required composition sequence and/or have not earned equivalent credit for Seminar in Composition, either through transfer or advanced standing credit.

NOTE: Students who have submitted to the University an Evidence Based Reading and Writing SAT score of 560 or higher or an ACT English score of 24 or higher are exempt from taking Workshop in Composition and are eligible to enroll in any of the Seminar in Composition (ENGCMP 0200) course equivalents.

English Language Proficiency for International Students
Consult with your academic advisor during your initial meeting regarding the appropriate placement for you based on your home country and citizenship status. English language placement criteria for most international students is based on Duolingo/IELTS/TOEFL test scores .听Each student's placement is different, and your academic advisor will review the details with you during your initial meeting and discuss the course(s) you are expected to complete to assist you in transitioning to the English-based learning environment. Please note: Receiving an exemption听from submitting Duolingo/IELTS/TOEFL scores during the admission process does not exempt students听from following the English language placement process in听the Dietrich School or CGS. However, international students from certain countries where English is a predominate language do not need to complete听the placement听process:听
French Language
If听you are interested in taking a French language course or another course offered through the French department please review the .

Mathematics
If you plan to enroll in a math course beyond the level of college algebra (MATH 0031)--such as Preparation for Scientific Calculus (MATH 0200), Business Calculus (MATH 0120), Analytical Geometry and Calculus 1 (MATH 0220), or Finite Mathematics (MATH 0400)--and have not earned college credit for the prerequisite course, regardless of your Math SAT or Math ACT score, please take the **.

During the pilot period for test-optional admissions,听students will exempt the Dietrich School's Algebra general education requirement by earning a grade of听B听or higher in a high school Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or Algebra II course. Please note: Students who apply to the University through test-optional admissions process cannot submit SAT/ACT scores for admission or enrollment purposes after applying.

Music Theory
If you are considering a major or minor in music. Students may elect to take the听听in lieu of enrolling in MUSIC 0100: Fundamentals of Western Music. A passing grade of 85% is required in order for the exemption听exam to meet this requirement.
Spanish Language
If you are a heritage learner, you are a transfer student bringing in Spanish coursework, or if you took 4 years of Spanish in high school and have additional experience with the language (studying or living abroad in a Spanish speaking country), please review for language placement.
